MOSCOW, April 2. /TASS/. The situation in Donbass along the engagement line is rather frightening, with numerous provocations by the Ukrainian armed forces observed there, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the media on Friday.

"Our rhetoric [over Donbass] is absolutely constructive," Peskov said in reply to a question. "We do not indulge in wishful thinking. Regrettably, the realities along the engagement line are rather frightening. Provocations by the Ukrainian armed forces do take place. They are not casual. There have been many of them."

Asked about chief Ukrainian delegate Leonid Kravchuk’s proposal "for the observance of full and comprehensive ceasefire" starting from April 1 Peskov said that Russia was not a party to the conflict.

"Truce concerns only the forces on either side of the disengagement line," Peskov said.

Tensions in Donbass soared on March 26, when four Ukrainian military servicemen were killed near the village of Shumy. Kiev blamed their death on the forces of the Donetsk People’s Republic. Donetsk denied its responsibility for any bombardments. Later, the Donetsk Republic said that the Ukrainian soldiers were killed by a landmine while inspecting minefields.

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov earlier said the Kremlin was worried the Ukrainian side might take provocative action in southeastern Ukraine, thus creating the risk of a civil war.

On Wednesday, Russian presidential representative in the Contact Group for a settlement of the conflict in the east of Ukraine, Boris Gryzlov, described Kiev’s stance on the issue of security in the conflict zone in Donbass as irresponsible and cynical.

A senior official from Nord Stream 2 AG, the project company leading the Nord Stream 2 Russia to Germany natural gas pipeline project, has reported an uptick in "provocative" activity from warships and planes in the area where the pipeline is being built.

"Higher activity of naval vessels, airplanes and helicopters and civilian vessels of foreign states is observed in the work area after restarted construction of the offshore segment of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, whose actions are often clearly provocative," said Nord Stream AG official Andrei Minin, according to the Russian news agency TASS.

Minin said a 1.5-mile safety zone is established around the construction area where vessels are not supposed to enter. "Nevertheless, naval vessels of foreign countries are constantly registered near service ships performing work," he said.

He added that a Polish antisubmarine warfare airplane is "regularly flying around the work area at a small height and closely to the pipelay vessel."

Minin said in one provocation, an unidentified submarine was above surface within one mile of the pipeclay vessel Fortuna, a ship that was hit with US sanctions on January 19th. Minin said the activity indicates “obviously planned and prepared provocations.” Besides warships and planes, he said fishing vessels have also come dangerously close to the construction area.

The Nord Stream 2 pipeline has been in the crosshairs of the US for years, but despite sanctions and threats, Nord Stream AG reported on Thursday that the project is now 95 percent complete. Construction restarted in December 2020 after being suspended due to threats of US sanctions.

Although it’s not clear if the US is involved in these provocations, it is likely. Washington seems willing to take extreme measures to stop the project and is threatening to sanction its ally Germany. Besides the US, another country keen to stop the project is Ukraine, which stands to lose up to $3 billion a year in gas transportation fees if the pipeline is complete.

The original Nord Stream consists of two lines that run from Vyborg, Russia, to Lubmin, Germany, near Greifswald. The new project would add two more lines, doubling the amount of natural gas Russia could export to Germany.

So far these are the key elements of what is taking place:

1.First, the Ukranians have moved a large force (infantry, armor, artillery, MLRS, etc.) close to the line of contact.
2.Ukrainian forces have also penetrated into the “grey zone” which was supposed to remain neutral and separate both sides.
3.Kiev has officially approved a doctrine which calls Russia the enemy.
4.The Ukrainian Chief of Staff has admitted that the Ukrainian forces are forward deployed and in the highest state of readiness.
5.The diversity-freaks who now run the US “diplomacy” have made numerous statements in full support of the Ukraine.
6.NATO has failed to reach any consensus (Germany seems to be the main reason for this).
7.The Poles are now openly provoking Russia by sending military ships (surface and one sub) and aircraft in the direct proximity to the Russian pipe-laying ships in the Baltic. In one case, a Polish fishing vessel has even rammed a ship claiming “engine problems”.
8.The French AFP reports that General Mark Milley spoke with General Valery Gerasimov, the Russian Armed Forces chief of staff, and General Ruslan Khomchak, chief of the general staff of the Armed Forces.
9.Russia has been steadily reinforcing her western border and, especially, Crimea.
10.The Donetsk People’s Republic has declared a mobilization of all her reserves.
11.The internal situation of the Ukranian occupied Banderastan is quickly degrading due to the pandemic, the infighting of various factions and the economic freefall. What does the government do to counteract these problems? Repeat “Russia! Russia! Russia!” like a mantra.
There are consistent reports that NATO is either already on high alert or will soon be.

Pavel Felgenhauer, an independent Russian military analyst has warned that the world will witness a European or even world war within four weeks. Felgenhauer made this prediction after analyzing large-scale Russian military movements in regions close to rebel-held eastern Ukraine and annexed Crimea.

Russian moves hint at the possibility of war

The West has already expressed concerns over Russia's military movement. Felgenhauer believes that the concerns expressed by the West are right, as unverified new footage appears to show military movements in Russia's Voronezh, Rostov and Krasnodar regions. Some footages show dozens of military helicopters close to the frontier, and the movement of tanks and other military vehicles using trains.

"The crisis has the potential to escalate into a pan-European war, if not even a world one. But for now, potential. Will it happen or not? Let's wait and see. In the West, they don't know what to do about it," Felgenhauer told Rosbalt news outlet.

As tensions are now escalating to new heights, Felgenhauer claimed that it now requires the service of a psychoanalyst to determine Russia's intentions in Ukraine.

"Address this question to a psychoanalyst. Do I need to explain? The facts are there, everything is already happening. The threats are growing, and rapidly. Much is not discussed in the media, but we are seeing very bad signs," added Felgenhauer.

The crucial stand of the United States

In the meantime, the United States has pledged its steady support to Ukraine. US defense officials on Thursday revealed that they were aware of military movements that are happening in Russia. Russia, on the other hand, has vowed to take strict measures if NATO decided to send troops to Ukraine.

Ukraine now alleges that Russia has 32,700 troops in Crimea. Ruslan Khomchak, the Ukrainian commander-in-chief, recently revealed that the country is prepared for all potential scenarios that could happen in the coming days.

East Ukraine headed for 'full-scale war' – separatist leader

The situation in Donbass is “critical” and Kiev can start an offensive at any moment, the head of the Donetsk region says

Full-scale war in eastern Ukraine can break out at any moment, with an attack by forces loyal to the government in Kiev, the head of the breakaway, unrecognised 'Donetsk People's Republic,' Denis Pushilin, told Russian media on Friday evening.

“Kiev can start a full-scale assault on Donbass at any moment, the situation is critical,” Pushilin told Russian television, referring to the two self-proclaimed republics in eastern Ukraine.

Asked by the host if there will be a war, Pushilin responded: “Yes. Unfortunately, yes.”

His comments came about an hour after an explosion outside the Donetsk government building, which turned out to be a car bomb targeting regional police chief Denis Sinenkov. He was not injured in the blast. There were no reports of casualties, only material damage.

Pushilin called the bombing a “sabotage” in preparation for an assault by Kiev. Every critical infrastructure building in Donetsk is under guard and prepared for potential terrorist attack, he added. Ukraine has been denying any plans for attacking the breakaway regions.

Meanwhile, the authorities in Donetsk and neighboring Lugansk have announced an evacuation of civilians into Russia. Pushilin said that “hundreds of thousands” of people – mainly women, children, and the elderly – may end up getting evacuated, while men 55 and younger will be asked to stay.

The US and NATO have claimed over the past three months that Russia is preparing to “invade” Ukraine, to the point where the Kiev government asked them to tone down the rhetoric as it was spreading undue panic and hurting the country’s economy. Moscow has rejected the allegations as “fake news.”

Putin and Macron agree on measures to halt escalation in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron have agreed to take urgent measures to halt escalation of conflict in eastern Ukraine, the Elysee Palace said in a statement.

During their Sunday phone conversation requested by Paris, the leaders agreed to resume work within the framework of the Normandy format, which consists of French, German, Russian, and Ukrainian leadership. It was also decided that a meeting of the trilateral contact group would be held “in the next few hours” in order to “obtain a commitment from all the stakeholders” to cease fire on the line of contact.

A meeting between French and Russian ministers of foreign affairs, Jean-Yves Le Drian and Sergey Lavrov, would take place “in the coming days,” with diplomatic work due to intensify in general, Paris said. Russia’s Foreign Ministry later told RT that the call is planned for Monday, since Le Drian was not immediately available.

According to the French presidency, it would involve all the stakeholders, i.e. the Europeans, allies, Russians, and Ukrainians, and would be poised, subject to conditions met, to make possible “a meeting at the highest level to define a new order of peace and security in Europe.”

The Kremlin confirmed that “the two leaders agreed to maintain contact at various levels,” but did not provide any specific details on such plans.

“Serious concerns were expressed due to the quickly deteriorating situation along the contact line in Donbass. The President of Russia noted that provocations from Ukrainian militants were the reason for the escalation,” Moscow said in a statement.

Putin also drew Macron’s attention “to the modern weapons and ammunition being sent to Ukraine by NATO member countries.” In Russia’s opinion, these actions are “encouraging Kiev to pursue a military solution to the Donbass problem.” As a result of “the intensifying attacks,” civilians in the self-proclaimed breakaway republics in eastern Ukraine had to evacuate to Russia, the statement said.

Right after his conversation with Putin, Macron talked to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky who, according to the French president’s office, “confirmed his determination not to react to provocations and to respect the ceasefire.”

Putin signs 'immediate' recognition of Donbass regions

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that Moscow has recognized the two self-declared breakaway Donbass republics in Ukraine’s east as sovereign nations, as a military standoff across the contact line continues to escalate.

Speaking as part of a televised address to the nation on Monday evening, Putin signed the decree, saying that "I deem it necessary to make a decision that should have been made a long time ago to immediately recognize the Donetsk (DPR) and Lugansk (LPR) People’s Republics," he declared. Lawmakers will now be asked to consider statements of friendship and support with the two regions.

The move, he said, was a direct result of the failure of the 2014 Minsk agreements, designed to put an end to fighting. "They are not interested in peaceful solutions - they want to start Blitzkreig," he claimed. "Every day they are amassing troops in the Donbass," Putin went on.

At the same time, he slammed Ukraine for “extreme nationalism,” "Nazism" and “Russophobia,” pointing to the shuttering of Russian-language news outlets and laws he said discriminate against Russian speakers.

The head of state also alleged that Kiev is sending saboteurs to target Russian infrastructure and attempting to "drag foreign states into conflict with our country." Ukraine's ambitions to join NATO, he insisted, would mean an "immediate threat of attack against our country."

"Let me stress once again that Ukraine is not just a neighbouring country for us. It is an integral part of our own history, culture, and spiritual world,” he said, emphasizing that Ukrainians are “people Russians have blood and family ties with,” as well as friends, neighbors and colleagues.

At the same time, Putin asserted, “modern Ukraine was completely created by Russia, or to be more exact, by Bolshevik Communist Russia.” According to him, “Lenin and his supporters did it in a crude way, alienating Russia’s historical territories. Millions of people living there weren’t asked at all.”

The Russian President pointed out that since the fall of the USSR, Kiev has turned its back on its role in the Soviet Union, toppling statues of leading Marxists. “If you want de-communization, we are happy with that. But don’t stop halfway - we are ready to show what de-communization really looks like,” he went on.

Moments before the speech aired, the Kremlin revealed that Putin had given notice to French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz that he intended to sign a decree recognizing the DPR and LPR “in the near future.” According to the official version of events, the two other world leaders “expressed their disappointment with this development,” but emphasized their willingness to maintain diplomatic efforts.

The announcement comes as forces loyal to the two breakaway regions and Kiev’s troops accuse each other of carrying out heavy shelling across the front lines. On Monday from Denis Pushilin and Leonid Pasechnik, the leaders of the DPR and LPR, calling for Moscow's backing for their independence. Putin chaired a televised meeting of the Russian Security Council to consider the request, in which he was urged by top officials to grant both regions recognition.

The two republics declared their autonomy from Kiev's control in 2014, following the events of the Maidan, when violent street protests toppled the democratically elected government in Ukraine. However, until now, neither Russia nor any other UN member nation has recognized them as sovereign nations, and Moscow has backed the Minsk agreements designed to bring a diplomatic solution to the conflict and reconcile the Donbass with Kiev.

Last week, Putin urged the Ukrainian government to begin talks to put an end to the increasingly tense situation. “All Kiev needs to do is sit down at the negotiating table with representatives of the Donbass and agree on political, military, economic, and humanitarian measures to end this conflict. The sooner this happens, the better,” he said on Friday.

Western leaders have been warning for months of a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine, and have said that Moscow could use “false flag” operations against the Donbass territories to justify sending its army in. Russia has repeatedly denied that it has any aggressive intentions, and has called for security agreements that would limit the expansion of NATO, the US-led military bloc, into Eastern Europe.

On Friday, US President Joe Biden announced that he had intelligence that had led him to believe that Russian President Vladimir Putin had decided to attack, and that it would take place in the next several days. The Kremlin has consistently denied it is planning to launch an offensive, branding intelligence reports released by Washington as "hysteria."

Over the past several weeks, Russian officials have been seeking assurances from the West that it says are designed at ensuring stability on the European continent. Putin said that these had been "rejected" and that "the level of threat for our country is becoming greater and greater."

In the proposals, sent to Washington and NATO in December, Moscow called for a halt to the US-led military bloc’s expansion, limits on missile placement and for current bloc members to renounce any military activity on the territory of Ukraine, as well as in other Eastern European, Transcaucasian, and Central Asian states.

Another clause also demanded that Kiev will not ever be admitted to NATO, which Russia has long stressed is a “red line.”

"Some NATO member states are concerned about Ukraine joining, and we have got signals from European capitals saying 'what are you worried about, it won't join NATO tomorrow' - but what about the day after tomorrow? And the day after that?,” he stressed.

Putin also confirmed "for the first time in public" that, in 2000, he had floated the idea of Russia joining NATO to then-president Bill Clinton during a visit to Moscow. According to him, the West has since created a vast political gulf to distance itself from Russia and undermined the relationship.
